H.B. 5004 An Act Increasing the Minimum Fair Wage
The bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Robyn Porter and Sen. Julie Kushner, and signed into law on May 28, 2019, raises the minimum wage in Connecticut from its current level of $10.10 to $15 by 2023. And beginning Jan. 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase annually based on changes to the employment cost index. It also prohibits employers from taking any action that displaces or cuts an employee’s hours, wages or benefits to hire workers under the age of 18 at a rate below the minimum fair wage.
Why it matters to working people.
It means more than 330,000 working people across Connecticut will be getting a raise.
What people are saying.
"Research shows that workers need $15 an hour or more just to cover the basics, and workers with families need more. By raising the minimum wage, the legislature is providing a life-changing boost for home care, airport, fast food and other low-wage workers struggling on barely $21,000 a year (and that’s if they are lucky enough to be full time).” —Sal Luciano, Connecticut AFL-CIO President
